Instagram image sizes

PlacementRecommended (px)Ratio
Feed portrait (recommended)1080 × 13504:5
Feed square1080 × 10801:1
Feed landscape1080 × 5661.91:1
Story · Reels1080 × 19209:16

Portrait 4:5 takes up the most feed real estate. Instagram re-compresses uploads to 1080px wide, so exporting at exactly 1080px keeps the most quality.

YouTube thumbnail & channel image sizes

Channel profile800 × 8001:1 (shown round)
Channel banner2560 × 1440safe area 1546 × 423

Thumbnails smaller than 1280×720 get upscaled and look soft. Banners crop differently per device — keep anything important inside the central 1546×423 safe area. Over the 2MB thumbnail cap? Run it through Compress.

Three rules that work everywhere

TipWhy
Resize to the recommended size before uploadingYour image survives only one round of platform re-compression instead of two.
Photos as JPG/WebP, logos & screenshots as PNGMatching format to content can halve the file size at the same visual quality.
Strip EXIF before sharing publiclyOriginal photos can carry GPS location and camera metadata.

Image sizes — frequently asked

What happens if I upload a different size?

The platform crops or scales it automatically. That can cut off your composition and adds an extra round of re-compression, so pre-sizing to the recommended dimensions almost always looks better.

Why does Instagram favor 4:5 portrait?

It occupies the largest possible area in the feed, which means more screen time as people scroll. The same photo simply shows up bigger at 4:5 than at 1:1.

What is the YouTube thumbnail size limit?

2MB. If your 1280×720 thumbnail is over the cap, compressing at quality ~0.8 gets it under with no visible difference.

What is an OG image?

The preview image that appears when a link is shared in chat apps and social feeds. It's set with the og:image HTML tag, and 1200×630px is the de-facto standard.
